Composition with Horizontal Lines

100 x 100 cm

Thornton Walker’s oriental bowls seem to float in space.  The peacefulness of his images have certainly a Zen quality, as is his intention, set against a background of a ploughed field, or the gravel of a Zen garden.  The mirror writing at the bottom of the painting reads “What is the Enduring Body of Reality?” The style he borrows from his young daughter who apparently writes equally well forwards or backwards!

The buying committee were attracted to this piece because of its simple beauty, the textured lines, and the incredible realism of the bowl, suspended.

Thornton Walker is well collected, his work being in the National Gallery in Canberra and Art Gallery of NSW and WA as well as many significant private collections.
