Vincent Fantauzzo - Brandon
239cm x 122cm Oil on Canvas
Purchased August 2012 from Metro Gallery
When the Buying Committee first saw Vincent Fantauzzo’s portrait of Brandon Walters at Metro Gallery, their immediate reaction was Wow .... but too big.
After much soul searching the Committee felt that it was such a significant work that we just had to acquire it for our collection.
Fantauzzo first became aware of Brandon Walters when Ben Luhrmann called and told him what an amazing kid he is. Luhrmann is Director of the movie ”Australia” in which Brandon stars, and is a friend of the artist. “I thought it was be great to meet him and that he and his family might be an interesting subject for a portrait” says Fantauzzo. “He was really shy at first but as I got to know him, he became bubbly and excited. He has already experienced a lot as a child, which I believe adds to his presence.
For this painting he did a couple of fully finished sketches. Fantauzzo decided to focus on Walters’ face for a couple of reasons. “He has a very intense gaze and amazing eyes and I wanted to feel the harsh Australian sun across his face”. Brandon was also the subject of another painting by Fantauzzo which won him the “People’s Choice award in the 2009 Archibald Prize.
Born in England in 1977, Fantauzzo came to Australia as a child. He has a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) and a Master of Fine Art from RMIT University, Melbourne
Vincent has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize on a number of occasions and has won Runner Up twice, he is certainly one of Australia foremost artists.
